About Christian Strömqvist

Christian Strömqvist is a designer and assistant professor at the Academy of Design and Craft, Faculty of Fine Arts, at the University of Gothenburg. He has a master degree in Child Culture Design, completed in 2011. Christians work is dealing with issues revolving around play, the child perspective and participation, with the aim to create meaning through interactions and collaborative processes.

Christian is also interested in practical distance learning through digital platforms as a method and way of teaching, and is involved in a number of practical distance learning courses and well as in developing new ones.

In the independant alumni organisation Play Without Borders Christian has been investigating play and created play opportunities in a global context. The organisation has done projects in Kenya, Uganda and Turkey, working with site-specific projects aiming to highlight the importance of play and working with a child perspective.

Christian is a co-founder of PinPin Studio that since 2011 is working with children’s artifacts and environments with a focus on play and playfulness. In this collaboration, Christian is also working a lot with ice and snow as the main material. Throughout the years Christian and Karl-Johan has done a number of projects for ICEHOTEL, including suites and icebars in both Stockholm and Jukkasjärvi. They have also designed and built the annual winter playground in Kiruna since 2014. The latest project – In Orbit, Spacebar by Icehotel – is a collaboration with Swedens first astronaut Christer Fuglesang, and explores how the experiences of space can be translated into an immersive experience in snow and ice.
