About Frida Petersson

I am a senior lecturer in social work at the University of Gothenburg. In 2013, I finished my PhD with the thesis titled "Controlling addiction. The logic, practice and semantics of methadone maintenance treatment”. The study contributes to an added understanding of how power is exercised and experienced in the Swedish maintenance treatment programmes.

My research interests are in the areas of social exclusion and control, the construction of social problems, substance abuse and dependence, as well as the meeting between the client and the system within social welfare institutions. Of particular interest is studying interventions directed against so-called "problem groups" in society – e.g. people experiencing substance abuse problems or homelessness- with a focus on whether additional exclusion results as a consequence of social interventions. In recent times, homelessness and the discourses and practices of welfare agencies which manage the homeless has become a particular research interest for me.
