About Jaan-Henrik Kain

My primary area of research is mechanisms that support or hinder sustainable urban development or even moving beyond sustainbility. The point of departure is to see buildings, neighbourhoods, cities and regions as interlinked urban networks and/or systems (people, social interaction, social space, housing, business, greenery, land, transport, information, etc), where each such network/system is typically made up of various subsystems. Anchored in the fields of architecture and planning, I have been involved in numerous action-oriented research projects, often involving facilitation of multi-stakeholder learning processes. Current research and innovation projects include topics, such as urban compactness, collaborative housing, urban ecosystem services and bio-based production, circular economy, remediation of brownfields, gamification, VR/AR, collective intelligence, and participatory planning for waste, water and sanitation provision. These projects take place in Swedish, European, African and Latin American contexts.
