About Karl-Göran Sjögren

Some of the central themes in my work have been the integration and development of computer-assisted methods and scientific analysis with the interpretation of archaeological data, with a focus on issues like social theory and prehistoric social organisation.

In empirical terms, my work has focussed on different aspects of the Stone Age in Sweden, particularly the Neolithic. A number or works relate to the remarkable concentration of megalithic tombs in the area of Falbygden, where a series of fieldworks have been carried out since the mid 1980’s, with the aim of elucidating the economic and social organisation of the societies that were building these monuments.

On-going work on has taken two directions. First, to revaluate burial practices in Scandinavian megalithic tombs using detailed recording and spatial analysis of human bones in the chambers, and second, to investigate the mobility of humans and domestic animals through isotope analyses. At present, I am also involved in the ERC project ”the Rise of Bronze Age Societies” (http://the-rise.se).

Selected research projects: Falbygdens gånggrifter (Persson & Sjögren 2001), Coast to Coast (published in the coast to coast book series), Anonymous Ancestors? (Ahström & Sjögren in prep), Elit eller kollektiv? (Sjögren, Price & Ahlström 2009).
