Department of Political ScienceAbout Maria Thürk
I earned my PhD at Humboldt-University Berlin in 2021 and subsequently worked for three years as a post-doc at the University of Basel. I joined the University of Gothenburg in September 2024.
Research Interests
My primary research interests focus on minority governments and coalition governments, particularly their formation, stability, legislative performance, and influence on policy. I also explore how the behavior of parties within coalitions is affected by different institutional settings, such as multi-level systems or strong second chambers, and how this, in turn, impacts their formation and stability. Additionally, I am interested in public perceptions of parties in coalitions or those supporting a minority government. I have also participated in a project with the Basel Institute on Governance in Bulgaria, which aims to study how the public perceives governmental anti-corruption actions.
Teaching Experience
I have taught different classes on topics in comparative politics at BA, MA, and PhD levels and supervised BA and MA theses. At the University of Gothenburg, I have been teaching the course "Institutioner och aktörer i demokratin."
