Visiting Lecturer
Department of Earth SciencesAbout Mark Johnson
Research interests Sedimentology, geomorphology and genesis of glacial deposits; glacial history of Scandinavia and North America; modern glacial processes; varved sediments.
Current project I have a broad interest in glacial geology, particularly the sedimentology, geomorphology and genesis of glacial deposits. I have studied hummocks, tunnel channels, and ice-walled-lake plains in the Upper Midwest, dump and push moraines in Colorado, central Sweden and Iceland, and most recently, active drumlins in Iceland. I believe that telling the glacial history of the Quaternary Period is intellectually interesting as well as important, and that it has direct practical applications for resource assessment, paleoclimate studies and environmental problems. My main interest areas are Pleistocene glacial deposits in NW Wisconsin, southern Minnesota, and SW Sweden, and modern landforms, sediments and glacial processes in Iceland. Along the way, I have also developed a strong interest in varved lake and marine sediment.
