About Markus Johansson

Areas of interest

European integration, EU politics, EU institutions, Council of the EU, negotiations, non-compliance in the EU, the common EU foreign policy, leadership, collective action.

Current research

I am a researcher in political science, and deputy director at the Centre for European Research (CERGU).

My current research is focused on non-compliance in the EU, in one project focusing on both what explains it and how it affects cooperation within the EU (https://www.gu.se/en/research/non-compliance-as-a-threat-to-international-collective-action). Another ongoing project in this area focuses particularly on capacity problems for compliance with EU environmental rules (https://www.gu.se/en/research/capacity-problems-as-an-obstacle-for-a-successful-eu-environmental-policy).

I also study cooperation and negotiations in the Council of the EU, which I started with in my doctoral thesis from 2015 (found here: https://gup.ub.gu.se/file/208106). I have worked with data gathering and analyses in the project The Negotiations in the Council of the European Union Dataset. Additional information about this project and the data from it is found here: https://doi.org/10.5878/6cry-c634

I have also done research on leadership in the EU, in particular in the area of EU foreign policy.

Teaching

I teach mainly at the Bachelor and Master level programs in European studies focused on European politics and European Union affairs. I also supervise and grade Bachelor and Master theses.

Education

Ph.D. in political science 2015. Double degree awarded from the University of Gothenburg and the University of Antwerp.
