About Mats Oscarson

My main research interests are language education, foreign language testing, and learner self-assessment of language ability. Some of the major research and development projects in which I have been involved are the Swedish national evaluations of achievement in the secondary and upper secondary school (coordinated by the National Agency for Education, Stockhom), the Modern Languages Projects (Council of Europe), and DIALANG -Diagnosis of Language Ability (European Commission and Council of Europe). In 1996 I was awarded a Research Fellowship at the National Foreign Language Center, Johns Hopkins University, Washington D.C., and spent six months there conducting research into language assessment. Teaching assignments abroad include organization of and participation in teacher training seminars and MA level courses in England, Portugal, Latvia, and Mozambique, mostly in the fields of English as a foreign language instruction and educational measurement.

I have written extensively on the subjects of language education and language assessment (for a representative sample of titles, see Urval av publikationer on this page) and have also authored – and co-authored – a range of teacher materials and language textbooks. I am a member of the Editorial Board of two scholarly journals: SYSTEM, An International Journal of Educational Technology and Applied Linguistics (Elsevier) and Language Assessment Quarterly (Lawrence Erlbaum). Since 2005 I am an expert member of the European Association for Language Testing and Assessment (EALTA).
