About Volha/ Olga Sasunkevich

I have joined the University of Gothenburg in 2017 as a researcher within the project "Spaces of Resistance. A Study of Gender and Sexualities in Times of Transformations" financed by Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation (PI Prof. Mia Liinason). Before that, I worked as a lecturer at the European Humanities University in Vilnius, Lithuania.

My research interests spin around questions of gender, sexuality, migration and ethnicity in Eastern Europe. I work from the regional and transnational perspective beyond the epistemic limits of "methodological nationalism". Besides my native Belarusian and Russian, I speak fluent English and Swedish, rusty German and basic Lithuanian. I also read Polish and Ukrainian.

Together with Monika Frėjutė-Rakauskienė and Kristina Šliavaitė I received Huttenbach Prize 2022 for the best article published in Nationalities Papers in 2021 (https://www-cambridge-org.ezproxy.ub.gu.se/core/journals/nationalities-…)

I coordinate the research network MiDem-Migration and Democracy: Confronting Illiberalism in the Baltic Sea Region (financed by the Swedish Institute) https://www.gu.se/en/research/midem-migration-and-democracy-confronting-illiberalism-in-the-baltic-sea-region

Since January 1, 2023, I am a scientific coordinator for the Graduate School The Future of Democracy: Cultural Analyses of Illiberal Populism in Times of Crises (FUDEM) financed by the Swedish Research Council.

I teach gender studies on all levels and I am willingly supervise or review PhD dissertations related to my fields of expertise.
