Since long time ago, I have been very fascinated with the development and economic growth in the world thanks to technological success that has made it possible for people to produce more without proportional increase in the number of persons involved in the production process. This facination with productivity and efficiency was further enhanced during my study years as student of economics, statistics and political science at Örebro, Uppsala and Lund University respectively. The healthcare sector was a sector I had thought of working in even before my third cycle-studies. When I found out that I could combine my fascination with economic efficiency and healthcare sector, I became step-by-step focused on this field, the field of health economics.
After some years of work experience from the healthcare sector, I saw that many anticipate difficulties for the future to uphold the current service quality. The main challenge is associated with demographic challenges due to an ageing population whose needs of healthcare services will increase, at the same time as lower percentages of the population will be in working ages. This increasing dependency ratio will also lead to difficulties concerning recruitement of healthcare professionals with right competence in a sector that gets more and more specialised. Digitalisation is seen as an appealing solution with the prospects of productivity and efficiency gains in service provision and treatments.
Based on the above-mentioned trends, my research focuses on study of cost-efficiency as well as cost-effectiveness of digital solutions implemented within healthcare. The research will mainly be within the Region of Västra Götaland in western Sweden.
