About Tobias Birgersson

Tobias BirgerssonSenior Lecturer, University of Gothenburg

Tobias Birgersson is a senior lecturer at the University of Gothenburg’s HDK-Valand Academy of Art and Design, where he has been an integral part of shaping the curriculum and guiding students in the craft and design disciplines. With a background as both an educator and a practicing artist, Birgersson brings a unique perspective that bridges theoretical knowledge and hands-on expertise in the studio.

A master craftsperson in metal, jewlry and holloware arts, Tobias has established himself as a renowned artist, whose work has been exhibited both nationally and internationally.

His practice is driven by a deep understanding of materiality and form, often exploring the intersection of traditional craftsmanship and contemporary art and design. This duality is reflected in his teaching philosophy, where he encourages students to push boundaries, experiment with materials, and cultivate their own artistic identities while remaining grounded in the technical skills that are essential to craftsmanship.

Throughout his academic career, Tobias has been committed to fostering an inclusive and dynamic learning environment. His passion for craft, combined with his innovative approach to teaching, has earned him a reputation for mentoring a new generation of designers and makers who are well-prepared to engage with the evolving demands of the contemporary creative reality.

In addition to his work at the university, Tobias continues to actively exhibit his work and collaborate with other artists, continually enriching his pedagogical approach with insights from his own creative practice.

Tobias’s recent artistic achievements include his latest solo exhibition, Bombyx Mori – Toolness of the loom at K.A Almgren Silk weavers in Stockholm, and his representation in the Swedish National Gallery. He is currently exhibiting at Liljevalchs in the group show DECO/DEMO with Nutida Svenskt Silver. Tobias also co-curated and exhibited in the critically acclaimed Wunderkammer in Munich. He is a founding member of Gallery LOD, Tobias continues to contribute to the growth of the contemporary craft scene. Additionally, he recently took part in the duo exhibition The Swedish Connection at Penland Gallery in the United States a collaboration with Andrew Hayes.
