Methodology in Global Studies
Summary
In this course, you will be introduced to a wide range of social science methods as well as to concepts and debates in theory of science. You will learn about both quantitative and qualitative methods for data collection and analysis. The course will lay the foundation for your future work in different research projects by developing your understanding of research design and the scientific process.
About
During the course you will get acquainted with core social science methods as well as ontological and epistemological approaches. You will learn about quantitative and qualitative methods of data collection and data analysis. You will also learn how to apply the techniques of statistical analysis, interviews, qualitative text analysis and participatory observations.
The course will introduce you to a scientific approach that will assist you in your thesis work. You will learn how to interpret and evaluate research and how to implement, evaluate and present a study of high quality. During the course, you will work in project groups to discuss and try different methods and scientific approaches. In addition, you will work with your individual research proposal, designing a future study in your subject area.
The course is taught as an in-depth BA level course in global studies, human ecology, international relations, and global development studies.
Please consider that the course is offered with English as the language of instruction in the spring semester, and in Swedish in the autumn semester.
Prerequisites and selection
Entry requirements
Entry to the course requires completed courses of 60 credits, of which 45 credits passed, in a subject at the Department of Global Studies.
Selection
Selection is based upon the number of credits from previous university studies, maximum 165 credits.
After graduation
The subject Global studies is relevant for students that are interested in future work with global challenges such as social, economic, and ecologic sustainability. The studies offer a broad range of social science perspectives that is a precondition if you want to obtain an in-depth understanding of current affairs. The studies learn you to critically assess and analyze societal phenomenon in a globalized world. Acquired knowledge at the course is requested by Swedish and international organizations, corporations and authorities.
