Understanding Metabolic Capitalism in Peru: Metaphors of Development

The talk explores metabolic dynamics in Peruvian literature of the first half of the 20th century in connection with contemporary eco-marxist critiques of energy. Concentrating on a selection of César Vallejo’s guano poems in Trilce (1922) and José María Arguedas novel of the fishmeal boom El zorro de arriba y el zorro de abajo (1971), the paper asks how do synecdochic and synthetic operations in this literature help us appreciate the politics of knowledge that constructs the erasure and permanence of guano as a global commodity? Can a trans-species perspective illuminate valorization in the metabolic flux of guano?
