Abstract

Where does the label “social ontology” come from, and what is its history? “Social” comes from Latin “socialis”, meaning allied; “ontology” combines Greek “ontos” and “logos”, the study of being. But when, by whom and why were “social” and “ontology” put together, to what purpose and in what meaning was this expression passed on to us contemporaries? This talk presents the findings of an inquiry into the history of the label. It is a mixed bag of inspirational stories and cautionary tales. It might be relevant for the future development of the field, especially in relation to social science and social metaphysics.
