Decorative architectural surfaces (including wall paintings, plaster reliefs, stonework, mosaics) are part of our immovable cultural heritage, inherently bound to the building they belong to. They are typically vast surfaces, varying both stratigraphically and topographically; their multi-layer porous stratigraphy is part of a physical open system, where the environmental conditions often cannot be controlled; and causes of deterioration often cannot be removed. This poses particular challenges for their conservation, which requires a holistic all-round approach.
