Abstract

The presented research started in September 2022 and is conducted under the umbrella of traditional craft knowledge for regenerative and circular building construction. The project’s main goal is to identify traditional building craft practices that are relevant to develop to ensure a positive interaction between built and natural environments. The research questions are grounded in the author’s experience as an engineer and carpenter in sustainable building construction. They are concerned with timber claddings because it is a traditional and popular feature with a potential for improvement in the design, production, and maintenance practices, as well as at the resource management level. The sources of information are literature, craftspeople -parts of the living tradition-, and observations of the present built environment in north of Norway (regions of Nordland and Troms), southern and central Sweden (regions Götaland and Svealand), and north-east of France (regions of Grand Est and Hauts de France).
