Offshore wind power and marine environmental protection: friends or foes?
Offshore wind power and marine environmental protection: friends or foes?
Sustainability and environment
Science and Information Technology
In this Sea and Society Talk, Gabriela Argüello presents research on whether offshore wind power can coexist with Marine Protected Areas, examining both potential conflicts and opportunities.
Baltic Sea States aim to increase offshore wind energy to meet climate targets while also protecting 30% of marine areas by 2030 through Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) and Other Effective Conservation Measures (OECMs). These two goals may lead to spatial conflicts between conservation efforts and the push for renewable energy.
In this talk, Gabriela Argüello will present her research, conducted in collaboration with Niels Krabbe, on the potential coexistence of offshore wind power and Marine Protected Areas. From a legal perspective, she will discuss potential conflicts between marine environmental protection and the deployment of offshore wind power. She also introduces opportunities to foster coexistence among offshore wind power, MPAs, and OECMs.
About the Speaker
Gabriela Argüello, BA, LLM, JD, is an Associate Senior Lecturer at the Department of Law at School Business, Economics and Law, University of Gothenburg.
