Where does the critical go?

Culture and languages

In an age of growing uncertainty, global injustices and climate breakdown, social, ecological and speculative practices in design, craft and architecture are needed more than ever. This forum asks where does the critical go and how might critical practices be supported in the future.

Location
Auditorium, Röhsska Museum, Vasagatan 37-39 Gothenburg

Conduct a survey of design, craft and architecture education in the national and international university sector and you will see educational programmes directly referencing the use of critical, social and ecological frameworks for practice. Once graduated, it can be difficult to understand and follow what happens to students that have been educated in these perspectives and continually reminded to think critically.

Through short presentations and discussions the forum will respond to the following questions.

The Critical: Reflections and provocations on the role and function of criticality in artistic education and practice today.

Support Structures: Examples of what support structures are currently available for design, craft and architecture practices that do not align themselves to or sit in tension with the commercial sector.

Speculative Structures: What types of support structures can we imagine into the future? Ideas, provocations and grand speculations on how we might support critical practices today and in the future.

Education, Pedagogy and Support Structures: Ideas and reflections on how ecological and socially engaged design, craft and architecture education might bridge the distance between the academy and the outside world.
