Supplementary education for non-EU nurses

If you are a nurse from a country outside the EU/EEA and Switzerland, you need to supplement your previous education in order to work in Swedish healthcare. This course package is designed to help you meet these requirements and gives you the opportunity to develop skills and knowledge so you can apply for a nursing license from the National Board of Health and Welfare (Socialstyrelsen).

Did you study to be a nurse abroad and want to continue working in Sweden?

This programme is for nurses  from countries outside the EU/EEA and Switzerland who want to continue working in Swedish healthcare.

The aim is for you to acquire the qualifications needed so that, after passing the education, you can apply for a nursing license from the National Board of Health and Welfare.

The program covers 1.5 years of full-time studies and alternates between theoretical and practical elements. The course package builds on your previous knowledge, skills, and abilities, and also focuses specifically on a person-centered approach and strengthening the nurse's role in care within the interdisciplinary team.

Please note that full proficiency of the Swedish language is required. 

Main Subject Area

Nursing is based on a humanistic view of humanity and encompasses knowledge about human development, health, and well-being in connection with birth, illness, suffering, and death. The objective is to promote a meaningful life despite disease or functional variations, and to enable a dignified death. The focus of the main subject of nursing is to alleviate suffering, promote health, and prevent illness on an individual, group, and societal level. Nursing is based on needs and problems related to health and illness and daily life, but also from people's resources and ability to manage their life situation.

Structure

Semester 1: Language introduction to academic studies

Semster 2: Supplementary education for nurses, theory 

Semester 3: Supplementary education for nurses, practical training (internship)

The first semester consists of a course in Swedish focusing on care in a Swedish context. This provides you with an opportunity to delve deeper into the Swedish language used in Swedish healthcare.

This is followed by two semesters of supplementary education for nurses. In the theoretical parts, you will learn about the role of the nurse in Swedish healthcare, legislation knowledge, pharmacology and drug calculation, health and illness during sickness, healthcare-related infections, and leadership.
