Museum of Antiquities
The Museum of Antiquities is run by the section for Ancient History and Archaeology at the Department of Historical Studies, University of Gothenburg. The museum's collection of original ancient objects sheds light on Classical Mediterranean cultures, particularly those of Greece, Italy and Cyprus.
Pottery accounts for the largest number of finds at the museum and provides examples for a period of over 5000 years, from the Neolithic to Late Antiquity. In the collection, there are also Roman coins which demonstrate the role of coinage in ancient Roman society. In addition, there are a number of Latin funerary inscriptions which illuminate aspects of the largest groups in Roman society, such as slaves and freedmen/freedwomen.
