6. Rethinking Nordic religious complexity
... from organizational, cultural and value perspectives.
The Nordic countries share similar religious landscapes dominated by protestant majority churches characterised by strong democratic structures and high levels of trust between individuals and state authorities. Previously, 20th century changes in the Nordic religious landscape were routinely explained by secularization.
However, in recent decades such explanations have been supplemented and challenged by theories of globalization and individualization. Recently, the complexity framework has been suggested.
This panel invites papers which present empirical material or raises theoretical questions related to using complexity approaches. Are there special concerns related to the analysis of Nordic societies’ implicit protestant values, culture and organizational structures which should be addressed and is the complexity theory the answer? Which theories should be engaged? Which empirical data should be collected?
The session is in collaboration with the NOS-HS series of workshops on Complexity and Beyond in Studies of Religiosity in the Nordic Countries (CBSR).
