Build towards a Master’s degree with free-standing courses

If you take free-standing courses in Religious studies and Theology, you can build toward a Master’s Degree of either one or two years (60 or 120 HEC).

Both degrees involve thematic courses and a final degree project.

The one-year Master’s degree (60HEC) involves:

- courses in Religious studies and Theology at second cycle, at least 30 HEC
- courses in Religious studies and Theology at first or second cycle, 15 HEC
- degree project, master of arts (one year), 15 HEC (RT2901)*

* To be eligible to undertake the degree project (RT2901), you must have passed at least 15 HEC courses in Religious studies and Theology at second cycle.

The two-year Master’s degree (120HEC) involves:

- courses in Religious studies and Theology at second cycle, at least 60 HEC
- elective courses at first or second cycle, maximum 30HEC
- degree project, master of arts (two years), 30 HEC (RT2903)**

** To be eligible to undertake the degree project (RT2903), you must have passed at least 60 HEC courses in Religious studies and Theology at second cycle including at least one course (7.5 HEC) that concentrates on methodological questions that are relevant for your degree project.

The following courses concentrate on relevant methodological approaches:

• RT2713 Historical Methods in Religious Studies and Theology (every fall semester)
• RT2710 Field Based Methods and Analyses in Religious Studies (every fall semester)
• RT2615 Hermeneutics: Theology and the Uses of the Bible (fall semester in odd-numbered years, e.g., 2023)
• RT2714 Tradition, Reflection and Formation: Theological Method and Analyses (fall semester in even-numbered years, e.g., 2024)
• RT2511 Manuscripts and Textual Criticism in Biblical Studies (fall semester in even-numbered years)
• RT2517 Jesus Among the Messiahs of Second Temple Judaism (spring semester in even-numbered years)
