In June, the Vice-Chancellor decided to commission the Faculty of Science's board to investigate which research station, Kristineberg or Tjärnö, should no longer be solely operated by the University of Gothenburg. The task was based on the faculty's long-term goal of achieving a balanced budget. Ingrid Petersson was appointed as the investigator in August and submitted her findings on 25 January.
Following the investigation, the Faculty of Science's board has suggested to the university's management that the University of Gothenburg should no longer be the principal for the Kristineberg Center. However, the statement highlights the strategic importance of the university's continued presence and activities at Kristineberg.
The University Board may make a decision on the matter at its meeting on 21 February.
Dialogue about new principal
During the investigation, Research Institutes of Sweden (RISE) engaged in dialogue about the possibility of taking over the principalship of Kristineberg.
"RISE would be an ideal principal. It is a large, government research institute that also operates internationally. It would be a continuation of Kristineberg's strong profile at the intersection of basic scientific research and technical innovation. RISE is already a partner at Kristineberg Center and has experience in taking over and operating research infrastructure," says station manager Linus Hammar.
