New PhD course in Molecular Quantum Mechanics open for registration

Welcome to register for the new PhD course in Molecular Quantum Mechanics, starting on the 22nd of January 2025. The course runs at half speed. Register no later than 16 December 2024.

Quantum mechanics (QM) account for the behavior of atoms and molecules at the most fundamental level. Thereby, QM is a central subject in order to understand the properties of all matter, ranging from technologically advanced materials to the processes taking place within living organisms. In this course, the theoretical concepts of QM are brought into focus in form of a seminar series. The course is based on the book Molecular Quantum Mechanics by Peter Atkins and Ronald Friedman.

Entry requirements
To enroll in this course, students must

  • have completed a basic course in quantum mechanics, such as those commonly included in dedicated bachelor’s programmes in chemistry.
  • be familiar with linear, non-linear and matrix algebra, polar coordinates, and differential equations.

Structure and content
The course consists of several modules, each including the following components:

  • Pre-recorded lectures
  • Recommended reading
  • Individual exercises/problems
  • Submission and correction of exercises/problems
Students submit their completed exercises/problems. After the submission deadline, each student will correct the work of a fellow student. There are deadlines associated with each submission and correction task.

Examination
The correction of your fellow students’ exercises is the main examination moment of this course. After correction has been handed in, the next module of the course will be unlocked.
