Football, pub nights, and English literature during Viktor's studies in Brighton

Published

Viktor Lilja took the introductory English course in the coastal city of Brighton. He gained friends for life, fluency in the language and a clearer vision of what he wants to do in the future.
- If you are interested in studying abroad and want to improve your English, studying in Brighton is a great opportunity, he says.

How did the idea of studying English in Brighton come about?
It all happened quite spontaneously. I was deciding between a few different programmes I could see myself studying, but none of them felt quite right at the time. That’s when I came across this course in Brighton. I thought it seemed like a great option to both study abroad and spark new ideas about what I might want to study in the future.

What have you studied before?
I graduated from upper secondary school with a focus on economics and law about a year and a half before this course. After that, I worked and traveled around Europe.

How would you describe your time in Brighton?
It was incredibly educational and fun—both the things we learned during the studies and, perhaps even more so, all the exciting moments and challenges that come with studying abroad. It was very social; there was always someone who wanted to do something, which made all the time outside of studying really enjoyable. I got to know several people from both Sweden and England, and I’m still in touch with them today.

How did your English improve?
It might sound obvious, but the best part about studying English in England was that you were forced to speak English. I already felt fairly confident in writing English, but speaking was something I wasn’t as comfortable with. It was tough at first, but after a few weeks, I really noticed how much of a difference it made to speak English regularly. Pretty quickly, it felt completely natural.

What advice would you give to someone considering studying in Brighton?
Do it! If you are interested in studying abroad and want to improve your English, studying in Brighton is a great opportunity. My advice would be to make sure you study enough to keep up with the required reading, but also make plenty of time for activities, socializing, and meeting new friends in Brighton! It’s not the most demanding course in terms of the workload, so there’s definitely time to do other things in your free time!

How would you describe Brighton as a city?
I think Brighton is a pleasant and welcoming city. There’s so much to do when the weather is nice in the autumn and spring, and it also has a great nightlife with lovely English pubs and various clubs if you’re in the mood for that. The people I met in Brighton were all really friendly and social. I actually went back to Brighton recently to visit my British friends who are still studying at university. It was great to meet up with everyone again, explore the city, and feel a bit nostalgic.

What is your best memory from your time in Brighton?
There are many to choose from, but one special day that stands out was when everyone in the course celebrated Valborg on a field near the university. Some of our English friends joined us, and we showed them what Valborg is. I think everyone had a great time! I’m also really into English football, so going to watch a match at Brighton’s home stadium was another fun memory.

What are your plans now?
During the autumn I studied literature at Uppsala University. A major reason for that was that I took this course in Brighton which renewed my interest in literature. That interest will always remain with me even if I choose other studies in the future.
