Frida Reis's Bachelor's Thesis Took Her to Venice

When Frida Reis wanted to change career paths after high school, she found the right fit in the Media and Communication program. This fall, she attended a conference in Venice to present her bachelor's thesis, and now she's preparing for a semester abroad in Brussels.

Frida Reis grew up in Gothenburg and wasn’t quite ready to leave a city she feels has a great balance between student life and other activities. In high school, she studied the natural sciences track and planned to become an engineer, but realized her favorite subjects were related to communication.

Now in her fifth semester in the Media and Communication program (MKV), Frida says:

“When I started looking, I discovered that the University of Gothenburg has some of the best programs in the country for communication. Since I also wanted to study in Gothenburg, JMG was the obvious choice.”

Enjoys Inspiring Lecturers

A typical day starts with a lecture in the morning and continues with studying, often together with classmates. What Frida enjoys most about JMG are the inspiring lecturers and the program’s flexible structure with plenty of independent work. Frida says:

“The first three semesters were very theoretical but surprisingly fun. Initially, it felt a bit stressful to write a bachelor's thesis as early as the third semester, but the teachers were supportive, and it was enjoyable to do research—it feels great to have it done now.”

International Conference in Italy

Frida wrote her bachelor's thesis as part of an EU project, Rewriting the Story, which focuses on women's representation in the media industry. It's a continuation of AGEMI (Advancing Gender Equality in Media Industries), a project in which JMG has been engaged for a long time. A few weeks ago, Frida traveled to Venice with Maria Edström, a former lecturer at JMG, to attend the project's final conference. Frida describes her experience:

“It was interesting to see two different perspectives, those of researchers and journalists, come together, and I learned a lot about the topic. I also got the chance to have dinner with Karen Ross, who has been researching female politicians for 30 years and whom I reference a lot in my thesis—that was exciting.”

Putting Theory into Practice

During semesters four and five in the Media and Communication program, Frida has been able to apply the theory she learned in the beginning. The course in communication planning has been her favorite so far, as it allows her to work with external clients and put her theoretical knowledge into practice.

Alongside her studies, Frida works at a trade union as a student communicator and is also the chair of JMG's student association, Gaudium. Her advice for future students is to be bold in applying, stay self-disciplined, and set up a good system to organize their studies.

Future Dreams

In January, Frida will go to Brussels for her exchange semester, where she plans to take a variety of courses. She hopes to combine communication with global studies. After completing her bachelor's degree, she wants to pursue a master's in communication and would also like to do an internship during her continued studies.

The field of media and communication is broad, and Frida appreciates that she can explore different career paths. She is most interested in working in the non-profit sector or public administration, and her dream is to become a communications director.
