Published

The School Public Health and Community Medicine at Sahlgrenska Academy annually awards the General Practitioner of the Year (West) to a physician who is a role model in general medicine, demonstrating strong knowledge, compassion, and a clear commitment to accessibility and continuity in healthcare. This year, Karl-Axel Eriksson has been awarded this honor, which also includes a prize of 5,000 SEK. The award will be presented at a ceremony at the end of the fall term.

Karl-Axel Eriksson has worked in primary care in Gothenburg for over four decades and is known for his strong dedication to the well-being of his patients, emphasizing the importance of continuity and long-term relationships. He has followed many chronically ill patients for extended periods and is particularly valued for his ability to build trust and confidence in patient relationships.

A key part of the award is recognizing contributions to the education of future doctors, which Karl-Axel has achieved through his many years as a mentor for medical students in the Västra Götaland region. His teaching skills and willingness to share his clinical experience have inspired many young doctors. He encourages a patient-centered approach where the patient's life story and social context play a significant role, a philosophy that has also shaped his own medical practice.

Karl-Axel Eriksson is being honored with this award as recognition of his ability to combine clinical expertise with compassion and his commitment to the development of the next generation of physicians.
