Mats Tullberg on NPH – The form of dementia that can be cured (podcast in Swedish)

Published

The latest episode of the podcast Akademiliv focuses on Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus (NPH), a significant treatable cause of dementia and walking difficulties affecting about two percent of those over 65 years old.

Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus, or NPH for short, is the most common form of hydrocephalus among adults. The condition develops slowly and is often mistaken for a neurological disease or dementia.

However, unlike dementia, NPH can be cured. A shunt operation can restore life for many patients with NPH.

According to Mats Tullberg, a neurologist specializing in hydrocephalus and adjunct professor at Sahlgrenska Academy, University of Gothenburg, twice as many people as those currently receiving treatment would benefit from it. His research group is working on simplifying the diagnostic process.
