Kyra Hanemaaijer

Kyra holds a PhD in Economics from Erasmus University Rotterdam and the Tinbergen Institute. Her main research interests include the economics of crime, education, gender, and labor economics. She also earned a Research Qualification from the Tinbergen Institute, a Master’s in Economics from the Erasmus School of Economics, and a Master of Laws from the Erasmus School of Law.

What are you most excited about in your new role at the department?
"I'm really looking forward to getting to know my new colleagues and learning more about their research. Everyone has been very welcoming, both now and during my previous visits. As for Sweden, I’m excited to be surrounded by more nature — something I definitely missed in the Netherlands, especially in Rotterdam."

How does your research connect to the ERC project, and what made you choose this research area?
"Before my PhD, I also obtained a master’s degree in law, and I’ve always been interested in topics at the intersection of law and economics, and the working of the justice system in particular. During my PhD, I studied how salience of minority background influences decision-making throughout the Dutch criminal justice system. In the ERC project, we'll also study biases in decision-making in the justice system, and potential solutions."
