There is a war going on in Europe. When will it end? And can we learn anything from history? Researchers from the University of Gothenburg are now organizing a series of workshops focusing on war and peace processes in the Nordic region.
Sari Nauman and Hanna Filipova, both researcher and historians, have, together with colleagues from Denmark, Finland, Norway och Sweden, been awarded a generous grant of close to half a million NOK from Nordforsk (https://www.nordforsk.org/) to conduct a series of explanatory workshops on the subject of “Pax Nordica: Experiences and Lessons of the Nordic Peace, c. 1721–1830”.
The project investigates how and why the Nordic countries went from being one of the most belligerent European regions of the 17th century into being one of the most peaceful ones by the beginning of the 19th century. It provides an indispensable case study of successful, long-term peace-building efforts, situating peace as embedded in a network of thoughts and practices, material as well as immaterial.
The first workshop in Copenhagen this week
The first workshop will take place at the Centre for Privacy Studies, Copenhagen, on the 26–28 April, 2023, with the second workshop to follow in Gothenburg during 2024.
