Pushpananthan recently received an award from IMIT, Institute of Management of Innovation and Technology and wrote an article about his ongoing research; Innovation ecosystems & industry 4.0 — Leveraging technological change to create ecosystems.

As a result of this award, Pushpananthan was asked to present to the top management of Getinge. The main theme of his presentation was on how innovation is being affected by industry 4.0 — characterized by automation and Internet of Things (IoT) technologies — where innovation activities span industry boundaries. Increasingly, manufacturing firms are developing products and services in innovation ecosystems consisting of actors from several industries.

Thus, the presentation was aimed at illustrating the challenges and opportunities faced by industrial manufacturers in the context of industry 4.0, with a special focus on a comparison between medical technologies and the automobile industry.

- The intention was to share my research findings and results from my research. This can perhaps be useful for Getinge in strategizing for industry 4.0, says Gouthanan Pushpananthan.

Research useful in the future

His research may help the future too, as also collaborations about innovation processes between universities and industry stimulate the development of new technologies and innovations.

- While industry often focus on developing solutions for near-term problems, academia develops knowledge that can be useful for developing solutions for problems that emerge in the future.  Thus, industry-university collaborations contribute towards business development and knowledge generation, says Gouthanan Pushpananthan.

Pushpananthan is a member of the research group which has developed at the Unit and Centre around Professor McKelvey’s Swedish Research Council Distinguished Professors Programme. Her team does a variety of research and activities relevant to innovation and entrepreneurship within pharmaceuticals, medical technology, and medical innovation, including the annual WOMI conference.
