Ronja Helénsdotter, a PhD student at the Department of Economics at the School of Business, Economics and Law at the University of Gothenburg, has been awarded a research position at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), one of the most prestigious universities in the world.
"I'm very grateful that the Wallenberg Foundation awarded me this scholarship. The research environment at MIT is truly amazing. I'm really looking forward to interacting with and learning from MIT's many excellent researchers", she says.
On May 22nd, she will defend her dissertation titled "Court-Ordered Care". The chapter "Surviving Childhood: Health and Crime Effects of Removing a Child From Home" was Ronja's job market paper, an academic essay used to apply for research positions.
"Being on the job market was a lot more fun than I expected. You get to meet lots of excellent researchers and visit interesting places. It's a great opportunity to build your network and gain knowledge about the profession", she says.
Ronja will begin her new research position on July 1st. She will continue her research on the inequality of opportunities and the role of institutions, such as the judicial system, in both perpetuating and mitigating these disparities.
"Through my research, I aim to generate insights that could be used to improve conditions for disadvantaged groups, including children in the child welfare system and individuals suffering from mental illness."
