The Kurt Grönfors Lecture 2024

The lecture was opened by the vice dean, Professor Lena Gipperth, who spoke about Kurt Grönfor's role at the School of Economics. The keynote speaker at the lecture was Professor Alexander Proelß, University of Hamburg. His presentation was about the critical connection between the sea and the climate from an international legal perspective. He spoke against the backdrop of the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea's (ITLOS) advisory opinion on climate change and international law. In this way, the role of international law in mitigating climate impacts on marine ecosystems and the state's responsibility according to the legal norms that are being developed were highlighted.

Erik Røsæg, honorary doctorate at the School of Business and Economics and professor at the University of Oslo, on the same theme addressed the importance of civil law and the possibilities of regulating ship calls so that ships are not brought forward at a higher speed than is suitable for port calls.
Snjólaug Árnadóttir, from Reykjavik University, commented from an Icelandic perspective on the convention texts in question.
Angelique Pouponneau, from the advisory board of the UN Ocean Decade, addressed global perspectives.
Gabriela Argüello from the Department of Law commented on legal issues regarding carbon capture, especially its transport and storage.
Niels Krabbe, maritime law researcher from the Department of Law and former Sweden's EU Presidency team during the final negotiations of the new UN oceans agreement, acted as moderator.

The lecture attracted students as well as professionals and researchers.
