Ukrainian refugees offered English classes

Published

Support classes are currently being organised for refugees from Ukraine who want to achieve the English 6 qualification required for university studies. The classes are offered by the University of Gothenburg in cooperation with Help Ukraine Gothenburg, the Gothenburg Stadsmission and Support Group Network.

64 participants can be accepted at the moment and there are about 40 people on the waiting list. Participants will be divided into four study groups led by four volunteer teaching students (grades 3-4) from the University of Gothenburg who have English as a subject. The classes started in February and are organised as two-hour sessions each week until the end of April.

"Many students from Ukraine have come to Gothenburg as refugees from the war and they need to be able to look ahead. We are therefore very happy to offer these classes, and we especially thank the teaching students who are volunteering their time," says coordinator Catherine Gillo Nilsson at the University of Gothenburg's Educational Affairs.

"Education, knowledge and capacity building will be key elements in Ukraine's reconstruction once the war is over. The students taking these support classes may come to play an important role in that process."

The support classes help the students prepare for an examination in English 6, which will take place at Prövningsenheten (Examination Office) in the City of Gothenburg at the end of April. Those taking part in the support classes are able to apply for higher education now, but must complete their applications by 17 June.

The support classes are held as a pilot and are evaluated on an ongoing basis.
