Consular Archives and Scandinavian travelers to Malta 1550–1950

Research project

Short description

This project aims to map the relations between Scandinavia and Malta from the middle of the 16th century based on recently found and digitized consular material, travel literature, journals of writers, artists, scientists and sailors. Malta has not only constituted a central node for shipping and power struggles in the Mediterranean, but is also frequently portrayed in fiction and travel stories. In studies of Scandinavian travelers, such as the peregrinatio academica of the 17th century, the Grand tours of the 18th and 19th centuries, Malta is seldom refered to. In addition, few Scandinavian travellers are mentioned in international overviews. This study will present a new and complementary mapping of Scandinavian traveling to Malta.
