Deep-sea protected coral reproduction

Research project

Short description

The New Zealand Government has strategic objectives that emphasize the need for data to support evaluation of adverse effects of commercial fishing on protected deep sea coral species, to inform their status and ensure that adequate mitigation measures are in place. These objectives rely heavily upon a good understanding of the reproductive strategies of protected corals, and are essential to inform the effective management and conservation of protected species.

This project is a collaboration with colleagues in New Zealand to examine reproduction in several species of important deep sea corals in the region, using histological methodology.
