Short description

Increasing the supply of renewable energy is arguably one of the biggest challenges facing our modern societies. Geothermal energy is a reliable source of climate neutral energy. Recent technological developments are opening up the possibility to extract geothermal energy directly in areas where it is needed- within major metropolitan areas, even when this area is tectonically quiet such as in Gothenburg.

Göteborg Energi  is committed to investigate this emerging opportunity, along with Geovetarcentrum (GVC) at the University of Gothenburg, as the major partner in all geology-related aspects.

Goals
The emergence of the municipality of Gothenburg as a prime exploration target for deep geothermal energy has enormous potential for the entire geology group within GVC. In principle, we want to follow two major goals that are closely linked:

1. On the one hand, GVC aims to become a major expert in geology-related practical issues related to geothermal energy exploration

2. On the other hand, we want to exploit the unique opportunity in terms of fundamental research of acquiring detailed insight into the deep basement directly next to one of the major geoscience
institutes in Scandinavia.
