Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery
Short description
The Department of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery runs research and developmental projects within biomaterial science, correction of dentofacial anomalies and malformations, oral cancer as well as reconstructive maxillofacial surgery.
Autogenous stem cells for bone reconstructions in the facial skeleton
A major research project at our department involves researchers from Chalmers School of Technology and the Universities of Tempere and Uolu in Finland. The initial work started in 2017 and consists of both experimental and clinical studies. We found a way to stimulate adimpose stem cells extraxted from the patients body fat to become bone producing cells. The vitality of these new osteoblast are confirmed and then mixed with beta-TCP and a growth factor – BMP-2, before re-implantation in the defect area. Large defects in the facial skeleton after eg. trauma or tumour resection can be repaired this way.

Surface modification of titanium implants
In a series of experimental studies carried out in collaboration with the department of Biomaterials, University of Gothenburg, Institute for clinical sciences, we have shown that a specific nano-pattern of a titanium surface leads to increased formation of newly formed bone. This bone is formed in direct contact with the titanium surface and interfacial gene expression analyses has shed light on the healing of bone in contact with various surface textures.

Factors associated with cancer transformation of pre-malignant lesions in the oral mucosa
This project focuses on factors associated for malignant transformation of lesions in the oral mucosa. Studies of the genoma and predisposition for cancer development in eg. leukoplakia are investigated.

Studies of osteoradionecosis of the jaws
Incidence and prevalence of osteoradionecrosis in the jaws after cancer treatment in the head-neck region is investigated in the region of Vastra Gotaland. Key factors for development of osteoradionecrosis after irradiation are investigated and new treatment strategies for improved healing are tested clinically.
