TiMS – Tourism in Multicultural Societies

Research project

Short description

The overarching purpose of TiMS is to explore the role of tourism in multicultural societies, primarily in Sweden but also in other countries, and to advocate for the inclusion and representation of diversity in tourism development and place branding efforts.

TiMS adopts an interdisciplinary and innovative approach to tourism studies, encompassing marketing, migration studies, design and interaction design, as well as concepts such as inclusion and participation, integration, migration, and multiculturalism.

TiMS advocates for a broad conceptualization of sustainability that includes social, cultural, economic, political, and environmental perspectives. While the focus is on all aspects of sustainability, social sustainability is at the core. The project facilitates real societal change through action-oriented research and collaboration between research and practice.

The short film below summarizes the TiMS project and discuss the concept of inclusive tourism. Inclusive tourism means that people, regardless of their ethnicity, nationality, skin colour, gender, class, or other social, physical, and intellectual attributes and abilities, should have the opportunity to experience tourism. They should be able to participate in the development of destinations and tourism products and benefit from them—for example, by benefiting from its revenue and be able to utilize its infrastructure.
