Brief history

The Centre for International Business Studies | CIBS, is a multidisciplinary research group administratively located within the Department of Business Administration.

CIBS was constituted in 1995, when professor Hans Janson was appointed the inaugural holder of the special chair in International Business sponsored by Handelsbanken, a senior corporate partner to the School of Business, Economics and Law at the University of Gothenburg. Hans-Fredrik Samuelsson from Uppsala University, who also worked at the Institute of Industrial Research and the United Nations, was affiliated to CIBS as an adjunct professor.

In 2001, professor Jan-Erik Vahlne, formerly at Uppsala University and Stockholm School of Economics, succeeded as the director. After professor Vahlne's retirement in 2009, CIBS has been chaired by Claes-Göran Alvstam, professor of international economic geography and former Vice-Dean at the School.

The centre's research interests and focus converge broadly towards a theoretical understanding of the mechanisms of the internationalization process of organizations in International Business (IB) based on empirical investigations. To that extent, it fosters and maintains a close working relation with corporations within various industries.

CIBS is host to researchers and doctoral candidates from cross-disciplinary research backgrounds that include business administration and economic geography. Furthermore, additional competences in regional development and industrial renewal in Sweden is added through our cooperation with Centre for Regional Analysis (CRA).

Being responsible for courses and programmes in International Business and Economic Geography at the undergraduate, graduate and post-graduate levels, the faculty of CIBS is also actively teaching in their specialized research fields, respectively.
