Diagnostic radiology nursing
This is a three year bachelor degree programme conducted in Swedish only. Radiographers work with people and advanced technology at the same time, meeting a large number of patients each day. The role involves carrying out thorough examinations in a professional manner, while conveying a sense of security and care for the patient.
Radiography is the main field of study, with a focus on providing knowledge on how various imaging methods are best used to make a diagnosis, and carry out and follow up treatments. The rapid technical development provides you with an emergent, creative and varied work.
The programme in diagnostic radiology nursing provides an academic professional education as well as a licence as a radiographer. The programme forms the basis of a Bachelor of Science in Diagnostic Radiology Nursing and prepares you for second and third-cycle studies. The subject of radiography has a clear clinical orientation with the main objective of providing knowledge on how various imaging methods, such as radiological examinations, computer tomography, magnetic resonance imaging or angiography, can best be used to make a diagnosis and carry out and follow up treatments.
The programme incorporates knowledge from the fields of care science, medical science, medical technology and social and behavioural science. Nearly one third of the programme is in work placement where you are given the opportunity to train practical skills and theoretical reflection in real clinical surroundings. The programme provides a broad range of expertise in various areas of operation in the field of imaging and functional medicine.
Who should apply?
The work demands personal responsibility and creativity and entails independently planning, carrying out and assuring the quality of radiological examinations and thereby producing imagery that forms the basis of reliable diagnosis and treatment. You work with exciting imaging technologies that present the body in detail and its various diseases in different image planes and in spectacular three-dimensional, and often animated series of images. At the same time, the patients' needs for care and well-being must be met. The work at a radiology department is conducted in teams and the labour market is strong.
Programme content
Studies are pursued full time. The programme comprises both theoretical and on-the-job training in work placement. Teaching takes place in the form of lectures, group work, seminars, method exercises and field studies. Right from the first semester, there is an emphasis on radiography, and this is complemented with courses on health and ill-health, and how the knowledge which a radiographer gains can be evaluated and communicated. The second semester is about the human patient: anatomy, physiology, biomedicine and somatic care. During continued education, the knowledge in radiography is deepened to include technology, examinations and diagnostics, as well as leadership, improvement knowledge pedagogy and a degree project.
The degree
Upon completion of the programme of 180 higher education credits, a certificate is issued for the Bachelor of Science in Diagnostic Radiology Nursing. The courses of the programme can also form the basis of a general degree at the bachelor level.
Studying and working abroad
The programme has been adapted internationally, and prepares students for working in international and multicultural contexts. It is possible to complete parts of the programme at one of the universities or university colleges worldwide with which the Sahlgrenska Academy has a partnership arrangement.
