English, Intermediate Course
Summary
The second course in English Studies builds upon the foundation provided in the introductory, first-term, course, and offers a more in-depth perspective on several major areas of English Linguistics, English Literary Studies, and Academic English.
About
The course is divided into four parts:
a) English Linguistics includes grammar, phonetics and vocabulary;
b) English Literary Studies, in which you will analyse literary and cultural aspects of texts covering the period from the Renaissance up to Modernism;
c) Theme course in English Linguistics focuses on a central linguistic field. This may be, for example, discourse analysis, historical linguistics or global Englishes;
d) Theme course in Literary Studies which explores a specific literary topic. Themes may be, for example, climate fiction, post-colonial literature or literary cultural studies.
In the theme courses, you will also study and practise academic English in
speech and writing to develop your skills in, for example, writing an
academic essay in the two disciplines.
