Summary

Are you passionate about working towards a more equal and more sustainable world? By choosing the course package Global Studies you will gain an in-depth understanding of how planetary challenges shape lives, environments and opportunities for action. With a strong emphasis on cutting edge interdisciplinary research and practical skill development, this package equips you to positively contribute to a more sustainable future.

About

Climate change and environmental degradation, the pursuit of post-carbon futures, and the persistence of violent conflict affect social and ecological systems globally. This course package helps you understand how states, international organizations, and other actors compete and collaborate to tackle these challenges and contribute to the dynamics of change. Situated within the vibrant multi-perspective field of Global Studies, the courses are informed by a historical and socio-ecological sensitivity towards contemporary planetary challenges. The package provides you with the analytical skills to grasp the complexity of global issues and the ability to identify political alternatives to address them.

The package consists of the following courses:
•    Global Studies: Theories and Perspectives
•    Globalities in Historical Context
•    Research Methods in Global Studies

Global Studies: Theories and Perspectives explores the theoretical and epistemological foundations within the field of Global Studies. It gives an overview on how different subjects conceptualize challenges pertaining to ecology and climate, security, and ideas about economic and political orders.

The subsequent courses Globalities in historical context and Research Methods in Global Studies will run in parallel. The Globalities course looks at the historical context and trajectories of political, societal, economic, and environmental developments, globally as well as locally. The course develops and historicizes themes brought up in the "Theories and Perspectives" course and is organized around three transboundary themes: Economy/ecology, society, and world order.

The Research Methods course will illustrate the potential of different methodological approaches towards different topics and aspects of global connections. Following an introduction to ontology, epistemology, and research ethics, students explore and practice different qualitative and quantitative methods for data collection and analysis.

Teaching
The teaching and learning methods include lectures, literature seminars, group discussion sessions, presentation, hands-on exercises and peer evaluation.
