Test for speech- and language pathologists trained outside the EU/EEA
The University of Gothenburg has been commissioned by the National Board of Health and Welfare (Socialstyrelsen) to be nationally responsible for tests for speech- and language pathologists trained outside the EU/EEA. The test consists of two sub-tests, one theoretical and one practical, to provide a basis for assessment of both theoretical and practical knowledge. The theoretical test must be passed before the practical test can be completed.
About the test
Theoretical subtest
The theoretical test measures the knowledge, understanding and judgement skills required to be able to work as a speech- and language pathologist in Sweden. The theoretical part includes 100 multiple-choice questions and 10 open questions, divided into two main areas, both development-related and acquired communication and swallowing problems. The pass threshold is 60% and you must pass all parts to pass the examination as a whole.
Practical subtest
The practical test consists of elements that speech- and language pathologist are responsible for such as testing, assessment, analysis, and suggestions for intervention. The assessments are made based on case descriptions and videotaped cases and include analysis and compilation of evidence for different types of interventions. You will be approved if you have achieved certain established criteria.
Who can do the test?
The test is for you who is a speech- and language pathologists trained outside the EU/EEA. You must also have received a decision from the National Board of Health and Welfare (Socialstyrelsen) that you can take the test prior to registering for the test. The test can also be taken by a person who has received a decision to take an aptitude test for speech therapists with education within the EU/EEA.
Dates for the exams and how to register
Both theoretical and practical tests are carried out in Gothenburg on the dates set below. The theoretical test must be passed before the practical test can be made. The number of test occasions is limited to five for the theoretical subtest and three for the practical subtest. From the first test, you have five years to complete the entire knowledge test.
Dates - theoretical subtest
- March 17, 2023
- October 10, 2023
Dates - practical subtest
- May, 3, 2023
- December, 7, 2023

Before you register for the test, your formal education needs to be reviewed by the National Board of Health and Welfare (Socialstyrelsen). For more information see:
Get your education reviewed (Socialstyrelsen's website)
Register for participation in the knowledge test via the link below.
NOTE! Registration must be done no later than one month before each test.
Preparation for the test
It is important that you prepare well, both for the theoretical and practical subtest. Before the tests, the literature that is used in Swedish speech- and language pathologist training is recommended. See especially: Hartelius, Nettelbladt and Hammarberg (2008): Logopedi.
After finishing the test
If the result is passed: After passing test, the University of Gothenburg reports the final result to the National Board of Health and Welfare, which then decides on the next step.
In case of failed tests or absence of result: If an exam participant has failed three times on the theoretical subtest, twice on the practical subtest or has not passed the theoretical and practical subtest within 36 months, the University of Gothenburg reports this to the National Board of Health and Welfare.
