Marine micropaleontology
This is a suggestion for a Degree Project for Bachelor's and Master's levels at the Department of Marine Sciences. Degree projects at the Department of Marine Sciences are done independently and must be written and assessed individually.
Subject: Marine geology
Nivå: Bachelor och Master
Handledare: Kjell Nordberg eller Lennart Bornmalm
Project description
The projects that are usually offered in the subject of marine geology are studies of microscopic marine organisms, so-called foraminifera, which are used as tools to investigate environmental changes in the sea, both in Late Quaternary and Holocene sedimentary sequences, as well as in completely recent environments.
Along the Skagerrak coast, unique opportunities are offered to use bottom-dwelling foraminifera as tools/indicators for environmental and climate variations. The marine conditions, and the lack of extreme oxygen deficiency that is common in the Baltic Sea and in Norwegian fjords, rich faunas are found in the sediments.
Marine micropaleontology has a close connection to physical oceanography to highlight how the hydrography has varied or changed over time (paleooceanography).
