Meet İdil from Turkey, Bachelor’s Erasmus Exchange Student in Molecular Biology and Genetics
İdil Selcen Yoldaş has a passion for molecular biology, chemistry, and computational methods. At the University of Gothenburg, she found a supportive and inspiring environment to do an internship focusing on Biochemistry and Computational Biology within the Erasmus Exchange Programme.
What motivated you to participate in an Erasmus Exchange Programme?
– There were several reasons I wanted to become an Erasmus student. Academically, I hoped to immerse myself in advanced research environments and learn new techniques. On a personal level, it offered me the chance to grow by experiencing a different culture, improving my communication and teamwork abilities, and meeting people from diverse backgrounds. And professionally, it provided me with valuable international experience for a future career in science.
Why did you choose the University of Gothenburg?
– The University of Gothenburg has a strong reputation in scientific research, especially in my areas of interest. The opportunity to work alongside leading researchers and contribute to innovative projects was a key factor in my decision.
What do you enjoy most about your programme?
– The most rewarding aspect of my study programme is the supportive and inspiring environment under the guidance of Professor Leif Eriksson. His approach to students is both motivating and encouraging. He listens carefully, provides valuable feedback, and treats each student with dedication and respect. He has been a major source of inspiration for me.
What advice would you give to prospective Erasmus students?
– If you are considering studying abroad, especially in Sweden or at the University of Gothenburg, my advice is to be open-minded and embrace new experiences. Engage with fellow students and locals by joining clubs or activities, and take time to explore Gothenburg’s beautiful parks and vibrant neighbourhoods. Stay organised to balance your studies and social life, and do not hesitate to seek support from the university's resources and faculty, who are usually very helpful. Most importantly, enjoy the journey and make the most of this life-changing experience!

Home university: Muğla Sıtkı Koçman University, Muğla, Turkey
Bachelor’s programme at home university: Molecular Biology and Genetics, a 4-year programme.
İdil’s journey into science: During secondary school, İdil became fascinated by the complex mechanisms of cells and the crucial roles that DNA and proteins play in life processes. As she continued her studies, her interest in chemistry grew, particularly in how chemical reactions drive biological functions. When she reached university, she discovered computational biology and saw the potential of computer-based research to model complex biological systems and accelerate scientific discoveries. İdil is currently in her third year of her bachelor’s degree.
Future plans: After completing her bachelor’s degree, İdil plans to pursue a master’s in areas like biochemistry and computer-based techniques. She also hopes to get involved in scientific research projects where she can strengthen her skills and make contributions to research advancements in the field. Her goal is to become a well-rounded researcher, with both theoretical knowledge and practical experience, ready to tackle important challenges in science.
