Reproduction in deep sea and cold water corals using histological analysis
This is a suggestion for a Degree Project for Bachelor's and Master's levels at the Department of Marine Sciences. Degree projects at the Department of Marine Sciences are done independently and must be written and assessed individually.
Subject: Marine Biology
Project Level: Adjustable to Master or Bachelor Project
Project start and length: 30-60pt, flexible start from September 2024
Supervisor: Rhian Waller
Location: Tjärnö Marine Laboratory
Project Background
Cold water corals are often ecosystem engineers creating habitat on the seafloor for over a thousand associated species.
Only 4% of cold water coral species have had any aspect of reproduction examined, compared to 50% of tropical species, and yet reproduction is an important fundamental process.
Project Description
These are ongoing projects as many preserved samples have been collected over the years by the supervisor that can be examined and compared.
These projects would involve extensive histological analysis, potentially examining differences in egg sizes, sperm development and/or fecundity.
