About Eleftherios Kasiouras
My PhD research focuses on investigating whether decapod crustaceans experience pain. In our lab, the Aquatic Animal Welfare group, we use various techniques from molecular biology, physiology, and neurobiology to study the behavior and physiological effects related to pain. My primary goal is to address the remaining criteria necessary to fully explore the potential for pain in these animals, such as the existence of nociceptors, behavioral trade-offs, and the effects of analgesics in crustaceans. In addition to pain studies, my project will aim to identify the most suitable methods for humanely euthanizing crustaceans.
