I have a background as a teacher in Social Science subjects in the later years of primary school. My research revolves around the curriculum as a tool for conveying democratically agreed-upon ideas about reality and knowledge.
Using analytical philosophy in general, and John Searle's philosophy of society in particular, I investigate the ontological and epistemological positions upon which primary school syllabi in social science subjects rest. Do teachers have the task of conveying objective knowledge, and if so, what is it, or is it as they say, 'anything goes'? In times of almost endless conflict about what is true and false, I find these questions very thought-provoking.
