About Göran Larsson

I am a professor in Religious Studies. While my research is focused primarily on Islam and Muslims in Europe, I have also written about Islamic theology, Quranic studies and issues related to religion and the media. Research on global conflicts (especially the wars in Syria and Iraq) and how they impact on Sweden as well as theory and methods for the study of religions and the history of the study of religions in Sweden are other research topics that I have studied and published on.

Although I did my PhD in Religious Studies at the University of Gothenburg, I have also held positions at Uppsala University and Södertörn University and have been a guest researcher at the University of Leiden in the Netherlands (spring 2004). Between 2011 and 2014, I was affiliated with the Department of Culture Studies and Oriental Languages at the University of Oslo, Norway. Since 2015 I am affiliated with the Segerstedt Institute, University of Gothenburg, and together with several scholars I have conducted research and training on violent extremism. Between 2017 and 2022, I was elected and appointed as the Deputy Dean for the Faculty of Humanities at the University of Gothenburg (50%). Since January 2023, besides my fulltime professorship at the University of Gothenburg, I serve as a Guest Professor at the Department of Police Education at Borås University (25%).

I am currently responsible for one externally funded research project on Digital Islam across Europe: Understanding Muslims’ Participation in Online Environments. This project includes researchers from the UK, Spain, Poland, Lithuania, and Sweden. The project is funded by CHANSE and the Swedish part is funded by Forte. This project started in October 2022, and it will run until early spring 2025.
